Debuting Informatics Icons Junior basketball team makes its mark winning the championship crown at the 8th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) as it trashed San Sebastian-Recoletos 71-51 on Tuesday, September 30 at the Makati Coliseum.

The Icons, who dominated the Junior division all throughout the season, was led by Bengie Teodoro, who also bagged the Most Valuable Player award, with 22 points.

The team’s mentor, Coach Budds Reyes has been very confident with the talents his junior and senior teams have and has envisioned the teams to eventually rule the league, but the realization of the dream came sooner than they have expected.

The former San Beda Red Lions head coach was called to lead Informatics’ sports development program, which commenced in January this year.  From the way things went, and witah initial achievements on their very first NAASCU season, nobody can deny that Coach Budds has pushed the right buttons early on.

Incidentally, Informatics’ Seniors team reached the quarter finals at the seniors division.

Informatics first tried their mettle last summer at the Fr. Martin League and the NIKE Summer League to measure their competitiveness against teams playing in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP). It is Coach Budds’ dream for his boys to compete and get exposed against these higher-level teams.  Thus, he is hoping that soon Informatics will be known as one with a very sound, aggressive and determined basketball program.

Of course, winning their first championship right on their first try will always be sweeter and unprecedented, but the Icons are not leaving any stone unturned.

“Hard work and no shortcuts has been our battle cry from day one. Informatics are dreaming and dreaming big!”, the veteran coach declares.

The Junior Icons team went on to win their first NAASCU victory with the skills and innate talents of Teodoro, Ceris Bunye (12 points), Enteng Ferrer (9), team captain Mark Buendia (7), JR Magbanua (6), John Ronald Dodds (5), Jocel Ponciano (4) and Kim Abiang (2).
